The Path of Least Resistance

The journey to deciding to study digital design in college has been anything but straightforward. I would love to provide a concise and clear explanation of my path and reasons for choosing this field, but in reality, my current position was determined through a process of elimination. I initially embarked on my college career studying Drum set performance and audio engineering, then transitioned into design, took a detour into photography and fine art, and eventually found myself back in the realm of design. I wish I could say that my journey of self-discovery has reached its conclusion, but I am still in the process of determining what I don’t want to pursue in a career. Although design is a significant component of my interests, I have realized it is not my ultimate calling.

Design can be incredibly rewarding, satisfying, and entertaining, but it can also be utterly draining. My time in the College of Arts and Media revealed that creativity, while fulfilling, can be exhausting both mentally and physically. It also inadvertently nurtured my ego in ways that I don’t believe are entirely healthy. These realizations guided me towards software design and development, where I find a comforting balance between creativity and logical processes.

To directly address the original question: I recently decided to study design because it represents the path of least resistance for me at this moment. The ultimate goal is to obtain a degree and move on from academia. While this may sound pessimistic, it is a pragmatic approach to my current situation. I simply need a degree, and from there, I can chart a course towards a fulfilling career.
